Vocation is another word for "calling." From the moment of our conception, God our Creator never stops calling us. He who created us out of love unceasingly calls us to love Him in return. This is the fundamental and innate vocation of every person.
Also from our conception, we are destined for eternal life in Heaven, which is made possible through our Baptism. There remains then the discernment of how God is calling me to attain eternal life in Heaven. For this reason, we need pray and seriously consider our mission, our purpose in life.
Our God who created us uniquely also speaks to all of us uniquely. No doubt, the manner in which He communicates with us is through relationship with Him, more specifically, through prayer. For us to know deeply how the Lord is calling us to serve Him, we should learn how to pray well. A good way to learn is to simply do it; but also helpful is asking a spiritual director, priest, or deacon for help.
When it comes to discernment, it is most fruitful to approach it with the accompaniment of a spiritual director. This could be a bishop, a priest, a deacon, or some other trained spiritual director. Pope St. John Paul II's Vocation Prayer Lord Jesus, as You once called the first disciples to make them fishers of men, let your sweet invitation continue to resound: Come follow Me! Give young men and women the grace of responding quickly to your voice. Support our bishops, priests and consecrated people in their apostolic labor. Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are carrying out the ideal of a life totally consecrated to your service. Awaken in our community a missionary eagerness. Lord, SEND WORKERS TO YOUR HARVEST and do not allow humanity to be lost for the lack of pastors, missionaries and people dedicated to the cause of the Gospel. Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help us to say "yes" to the Lord who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of salvation.
Another Vocation Prayer Loving and merciful God, in Baptism you called us by name making us members of your people, the Church. We praise you for your goodness, we thank you for your gifts. We ask you to strengthen us in our desire to follow Jesus, your Son. Look upon us with love and bless your Church with generous single men and women, with loving husbands and wives, with caring parents, with dedicated priests, deacons, sisters and brothers. You have called us to be faithful signs of your presence in the midst of the world. Help us to see our vocation as a journey towards You, We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
